Sustainability Reimagined

At Commune, we’re obsessive about design, especially where it can help us build a more
sustainable brand. From the earliest days of building the business we realised that the traditional signifiers of sustainable business weren’t going far enough for us – the refill pouches, glass bottles and certified marks that now dominate the product shelves.

On developing Commune, we realised that many of these mainstays were actually papering over the cracks: we needed to start from scratch in designing a truly ecological approach.

Fully Recyclable Bottle

This is how we settled on our distinctive bottles, based on aluminium being the most easily recyclable material available (with 70% of the aluminium in circulation coming from recycled rather than virgin metal). While refill pouches still use plastic and glass degrades each time it’s melted down, aluminium can be endlessly recycled into a product with the exact same properties as before.

Our bottles may look unusual when compared to other personal care
brands, but that’s a result of us having started from scratch on tackling the sustainability challenge the best way we can. By designing our bottles to hold a generous 550ml & 750ml of product we have also ensured that packaging and shipping is kept to a minimum.

Designed To Last

While the bottles have been designed to be easily recyclable (especially since there is only one type of aluminium, compared to 7 types for domestic plastics) everything else in the Commune product offer is designed to last a lifetime – from steel pumps to vegan leather holding cases and ornate tube keys. They’re lovingly crafted so they become objects that you want to hold onto, rather than use a few times and dispose of. The most sustainable thing we can all do is consume less, so where possible we’ve designed things that you can buy once and hold onto.
